How is BVD transmitted?

The virus spreads through DIRECT CONTACT with:

  • The blood, vomit, feaces, urine, sweat, saliva, breast milk, or semen of a person who is sick with or has DIED from BVD.
  • Surfaces, bedding, clothing, or dishes contaminated with these fluids.
  • Wild animals — especially fruit bats and monkeys. Never touch sick or dead animals found in the forest.

BVD DOES NOT spread through the air, through breathing near someone, or through mosquito bites.

People can only transmit BVD AFTER symptoms appear. Before symptoms develop, they are not infectious.
