Treating Cholera- Seeking health care

What is Ebola and what is Bundibugyo Virus Disease (BVD)?

Ebola is a rare but potentially deadly disease that spreads through contact with the blood or bodily fluids of an infected person.

The current outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo Virus Disease (BVD), a very rare form of the known virus for which intensive work is underway to develop a vaccine and effective treatment.

BVD can hit in a very short period of time; the incubation period for the virus is around 20 days, and it can have a serious impact on your health: first comes fever, tiredness, muscle pain and headache, then vomiting, diarrhoea and, in some cases, bleeding.

Important: do NOT wait for bleeding before seeking help. Bleeding is rare in BVD. If you have three or more of these early symptoms, go to a health centre immediately.

Children are among the most affected. Beyond getting sick themselves, they also suffer when the outbreak disrupts the schools, healthcare, food support and child protection services they depend on every day.

Remember, it is important to share verified information, find and support cases, trace contacts and keep essential services running.
