Before we start each section, we’ll ask you a question to help you see how much you you've learned.
Lead is a metal that occurs naturally on the earth and that for a long time has been used in the manufacture of products such as batteries, paints, ceramics, and cosmetics. Although it has been useful for many things, lead is highly toxic, especially for children and pregnant women.
- Around 1 in 3 children, or up to 800 million worldwide, have harmful levels of lead in their blood.
- For children, even the smallest amount can cause lasting harm. Lead lingers in the body, causing irreparable damage that lasts a lifetime.
The overuse of lead is causing a major global health crisis, one that is not getting enough attention. But we can change that. Together, we can defeat the ghost of lead pollution.
While lead is dangerous for everyone, some people are far more at risk than others.
