Playing with 2 Year Olds

WHAT YOU CAN DO AND LOOK OUT FOR

• Ask simple questions and listen to answers. Encourage your child to respond to simple questions, "what is that?", “where is the window?”.

Notice growing interest as they try to answer your questions.

• Read stories and ask him/her about what they see in the book.

Notice your child is memorising and trying to repeat what you are reading.

• Help your child learn numbering objects by asking: how many are there?

Your child will gradually develop the skill of corresponding objects with numbers; For example, from referring to dogs in a page, to say two dogs, and with practice, one black dog and one brown dog.

• Offer your child shapes cut from coloured paper to compare and sort.

She/he should be pleased to try to sort things out, organise collections and learn how to organise and make relationships between objects, colors and shapes.

• Encourage your child to use language to give reasons for, and ask for information when needed. Do answer your child’s questions with clear language.

Observe that your child is developing thinking skills and should be able to handle more and more complex things.
