Promote water hygiene and safety 🚰

  • Promote collection of water from a known safe source (where quality is being monitored on a frequent basis). Remind people that even if it looks clear, water can contain the bacteria causing cholera. During an outbreak, is recommended to always treat the water.
  • Recommend boiling water until bubbling and then for at least one additional minute[SA1] . After boiling, drinking water should be stored safely in a clean, tightly sealed container to avoid recontamination.
  • Recommend using household water treatment chemicals (liquid or tablets) following the manufacturer’s instructions (eg. one bottle cap for 20 L recipient, wait for 30 minutes before drinking or using it to wash vegetables or food preparation items)
  • If household water chemicals are not available, add 3 to 5 drops of chlorine (such as 5 – 9 % unscented household bleach) to one litre of water. Wait at least 30 minutes before using.
  • Promote drinking water in a clean, covered pot or bucket or other container with a small opening and a cover. Water should be used within 24 hours of collection.
  • Recommend pouring water from the container; people must avoid dipping a cup into the container. If dipping into the water container cannot be avoided, recommend using a cup or other utensil with a handle to scoop the water.
