Preventing Cholera- Washing hands and food

What to do to prevent and treat cholera? 🩺

Cholera is spreading because many people don't have access to safe water and proper sanitation (use of latrines, hand washing with soap and a clean environment). While some countries and communities are improving, others are facing bigger challenges due to climate change, economic issues, conflicts and people being forced to move. Having clean water and good sanitation is crucial to stop cholera from spreading.

There are many ways you can help prevent cholera and lessen its impact. Cholera is easy to treat if you act fast, get medical help quickly if there's an outbreak. With early and proper treatment, the number of deaths can stay low.

Preventive measures:

If cholera is present in your community, protect yourself and your loved ones by following these recommendations:

  • Drink safe water and use safe water for cooking 🚰
  • Wash your hands regularly using soap and water, especially after using the toilet and before eating and preparing food 🧼
  • Safe sanitation: make sure you always use a latrine and dispose of your baby’s excreta (poo) in a latrine or toilet; keep the latrine space clean at all times and/or away from your home 🧻
  • Food hygiene: cook food thoroughly, keeping it covered, and eat immediately after cooking it, while it is still hot and make sure you keep any remaining food covered and away from flies 🍲
  • Clean Environment: keep your surroundings clean and free from flies 🧹
  • Get vaccinated with the oral cholera vaccine if it is available to you 💉
